Scope of Work
A scope of work is the boundary of the job. It is the document you point to when someone asks whether a request is included.
What's Included
- Overview
- Objectives
- In-scope work
- Deliverables
- Out of scope
- Responsibilities
- Assumptions
- Acceptance criteria
- Schedule
- Change handling
Best For
After a proposal is accepted and before a project plan is used to run the work.
Target Audience
Agency owners, consultants, freelance operators, and client-side project sponsors.
How to Customize
Edit the disclaimer only with counsel. Keep acceptance criteria observable — something a third party could confirm happened.
When to Use
Use this after a proposal is accepted and before execution starts. If you are still trying to win the work, start with a Business Proposal or Project Proposal instead.

Scope of Work: Harbor Lane Dispatch Portal Modernization
Client | Provider | Effective date | Related proposal |
|---|---|---|---|
Harbor Lane Logistics | Northfield Advisory | September 19, 2026 | Project Proposal dated August 28, 2026 |
This Scope of Work describes the services Northfield Advisory will perform. It is not a legal contract, does not create attorney-client advice, and is not a substitute for counsel-reviewed terms. Attach it to your own agreement if you need an enforceable instrument.
1. Project overview
Northfield Advisory will replace Harbor Lane’s multi-channel dispatch intake with a single portal, a dispatcher work queue, and a weekly customer status digest. The work is limited to the deliverables listed below.
Project objective: Reduce per-order status handling time by 75% and retire the Friday customer-status spreadsheet by January 15, 2027.
2. In-scope work
Document the current intake paths and the 12 known exception types.
Configure a dispatcher work queue with owner, due time, and status.
Configure a weekly digest for the 18 accounts that currently receive Friday emails.
Pilot the Midwest region (four dispatchers, six accounts) for two weeks.
Train 11 dispatchers and provide a 30-day hypercare window after company-wide handoff.
3. Deliverables
Deliverable | Format | Due |
|---|---|---|
Current-state intake map | ZuffSuite document | Oct 17, 2026 |
Live dispatcher queue | Configured workspace | Nov 21, 2026 |
Weekly digest (pilot) | Email digest + workspace view | Nov 21, 2026 |
Training guide and SOP addendum | ZuffSuite documents | Dec 11, 2026 |
Acceptance record | Signed checklist | Jan 15, 2027 |
4. Out of scope
Customer mobile application.
Billing, invoicing, or payment-gateway work.
Warehouse barcode scanners or other hardware.
After-hours on-call coverage beyond the 30-day hypercare window.
Legal, HR, or regulatory filings.
5. Responsibilities
Harbor Lane provides | Northfield Advisory provides |
|---|---|
Sponsor decisions within two business days; dispatcher interview time; sample orders; access to current spreadsheets | Project lead, operations designer, weekly status, training, and hypercare as listed |
6. Assumptions
Harbor Lane’s ZuffSuite workspace remains available for document and training deliverables.
Pilot accounts can receive email digests at their current Friday addresses.
No change to Harbor Lane’s payroll or billing systems is required for this scope.
7. Acceptance criteria
Four Midwest dispatchers complete a live order in the queue without using the spreadsheet.
Six pilot accounts receive the digest for two consecutive Fridays.
All 11 dispatchers complete the training checklist.
Maya Chen confirms the spreadsheet is retired for customer-status reporting.
8. Schedule
Work begins October 6, 2026 and closes January 15, 2027, matching the approved Project Proposal milestones. Slippage caused by delayed Harbor Lane decisions extends dates day-for-day.
9. Change handling
Requests that add deliverables, accounts, regions, or integrations are written as a change note. Northfield Advisory will price the change before any extra work starts. Unwritten “quick adds” are out of scope by default.
10. Related documents
This scope follows the Project Proposal dated August 28, 2026. Once work starts, the living schedule lives in the Project Plan. Weekly progress is reported in the Project Status Report.
What this document is
A scope of work (SOW) states what will be performed, what will not, who is responsible, how completion is judged, and how changes are handled. It is a project document, not a substitute for a lawyer-drafted agreement.
When to use it
Use this after a proposal is accepted and before execution starts. If you are still trying to win the work, start with a Business Proposal or Project Proposal instead.
How to use this ZuffSuite template
Keep the project name identical to your proposal. Make the out-of-scope list concrete. Replace Harbor Lane names with your client. Attach this document to your own service agreement if you need enforceability.
Best practices
- Write exclusions as carefully as inclusions.
- Name the related proposal so the two documents stay a pair.
- Define how unwritten requests are treated.
Common mistakes
- Calling a template “legally binding” without counsel review.
- Using “as needed” as a substitute for a deliverable list.
- Omitting a change-handling sentence.

Questions people actually ask
- Is a scope of work the same as a contract?
- No. A scope of work describes the services. A contract (reviewed by counsel) is what makes terms enforceable. This template includes a disclaimer for that reason.
- What does SOW stand for?
- Scope of work. Some teams also say “statement of work.” Both describe the boundary of the job.
