Free final grade calculator
Enter your current pre-final grade, the final exam's weight, and your target course grade. We'll calculate the exam score needed.
Final exam scenario
Example values are filled in. Replace with your own.
Your current grade should reflect all work *except* the final. If your syllabus uses weighted categories, first check your current average with the Grade Calculator.
Exam score required
94.67%
Score at least this much on your final to reach your target, assuming no other grade changes.
Possible course-grade range
61.60% – 91.60%
If you score between 0% and 100% on the final.

How to calculate what you need on your final exam
Your final grade depends on how much of the course is already complete, the weight of the last exam, and the overall grade you want. This calculator works backward from your target.
Enter your current grade
Use your weighted average on all pre-final work—not the number of course points earned so far.
Add the exam weight
Find the percentage of your final course grade assigned to the exam, such as 20%, 25%, or 30%.
Choose a target
Enter the course percentage you want to finish with. The calculator shows the required exam score and whether it is possible.
Required exam score = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight
Here weight is a decimal: for a 30% final, use 0.30. Current and target are percentage grades on a 0–100 scale. This assumes all other coursework stays unchanged.
Worked example
What do I need on my final to get an A?
Say you have an 88% before the final, the exam is worth 30%, and you want a 90% overall course grade. Here's how the numbers work.
Current average
88%
Across work worth 70% of your course
Final exam weight
30%
Remaining share of course grade
Desired course grade
90%
The overall percentage you're aiming for
Score needed for 90% overall
(90 − 88 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30
94.67%
Even a perfect 100% on this exam would yield only 91.60% overall, because the earlier 70% of your grade stays at 88%. The calculator also shows your full possible range.
Target grade scenarios
How much would I need for a B, an A, or a higher target?
Keeping the same 88% current grade and 30% exam weight, different targets change the required final-exam score.
Target 85% overall
78.00%
Possible with a solid exam score
Target 90% overall
94.67%
Possible, but a high score is needed
Target 95% overall
111.33%
Not possible on a 100-point exam
If the result is over 100%, the target is not reachable under a standard 100-point final. If it is zero or less, you already meet that target even with a zero on the final, assuming the syllabus uses these exact weights. Grade boundaries vary by professor, so enter the numeric target from your course policy.

How to use this calculator
Final Grade Calculator: what to know
This assumes your current grade is the average across all work before the final, and the final has a fixed percentage weight. Some courses use points instead of percentages, round differently, curve exams, or have extra-credit rules.
Common questions
What do I need on my final exam to get an A?
Enter the numeric percentage your course uses for an A, your current pre-final average, and the final exam weight. The calculator computes the required exam percentage.
What is the formula for the final grade I need?
Required final score = (target overall percentage − current pre-final percentage × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. Enter final weight as a decimal, such as 0.30 for 30%.
Can I still get a 90 if my current grade is 88?
If your final is worth 30% of the class, you'd need about 94.67% on the final to earn 90% overall, assuming all other scores stay the same.
What if the result is higher than 100%?
Your target is mathematically out of reach on a standard 0–100 final exam under the entered weights, unless your syllabus permits extra credit or grade adjustments.
What if the required score is below zero?
You have already reached that target under the weighting assumptions; even a zero on the final would leave your overall grade at or above the target.
Is the final exam weight the same as the remaining class weight?
Only if the final exam is the sole ungraded component. If projects or homework remain, those grades must also be included in your grade projection.
