Weighted grades explained
How to calculate a weighted class grade
If your syllabus assigns different percentages to homework, quizzes, exams, and projects, you need a weighted grade calculator—not a simple average. Only the graded portion of the course is used for your current average.
Check the syllabus
Find the percentage weight for each assessment or category, such as homework 20%, quizzes 30%, and exams 50%.
Enter earned scores
Add each completed assessment's percentage score and share of the overall course grade. Leave ungraded scores blank.
See your current average
View your percentage across graded work, the course points earned so far, and the weight still outstanding.
Current grade = Σ (score × weight) ÷ Σ graded weights
Use scores as percentages and weights as percentages. Only include graded assessments. For example, an 80% quiz weighted at 30% contributes 24 course points.
Worked example
Weighted grade example with homework, quizzes, and a midterm
Suppose three parts of your course have been graded, while the final exam (25% of the course) is still ungraded.
Current weighted average
63.65 earned points ÷ 75% graded weight
84.87%
Your grade is 84.87% on the completed 75% of the course, not 63.65%. The latter is the number of points you've earned toward the entire course so far. The remaining 25% will affect your final course grade after the final exam is graded.
Avoid grading mistakes
Weighted grades vs. points-based grading
Make sure you use the grading method listed in your syllabus. The two approaches can produce different percentages.
Weighted categories
Homework might be worth 20% and exams 60%, regardless of how many individual items appear in each category. Enter an accurate category average with its course weight, or split that category weight consistently across its items.
Total points
If your instructor uses points only, add earned points and divide by the total possible points for completed work. This tool expects percentage scores and course weights; it is not a raw points calculator.
Do not enter both a category average and all the assignments inside that category, or you will double-count the same work. If your course drops the lowest quiz, curves exam scores, or includes extra credit, use the instructor's adjusted scores before entering them.

How to use this calculator
Grade Calculator: what to know
This calculator divides earned weighted points by the weight of completed work. It does not assume ungraded assignments are zero. Verify that your syllabus weights add up to 100%, and check for category drops, curves, and extra-credit policies.
Common questions
How do I calculate my current grade?
Multiply each completed assessment's percentage score by its course weight, add the weighted points, and divide by the total weight of completed assessments.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted grades?
A weighted class grade gives assessments different importance based on your syllabus. A simple average treats each score equally and can be inaccurate when exams count more than homework.
Are missing or ungraded assignments counted as zero?
No. Leave an ungraded score blank; it is excluded from the current average. Enter zero only when the assignment has actually been graded as zero.
Why doesn't my current grade equal the points I've earned toward the full course?
Your current grade is normalized by the weight already graded. If you've earned 63.65 points toward the full 100-point course and only 75% is graded, your current average is 84.87%, not 63.65%.
Can I enter a points-based gradebook?
This tool expects score percentages and course weights, not raw earned and possible points. Convert each assessment to a percentage first, or use your instructor's points-based method.
How can I find out what I need on my final?
Use the Final Grade Calculator with your current pre-final average, target overall grade, and the final exam's course weight.
