GPA explained

How to calculate your college GPA

A college GPA calculator uses the credit hours for each course, so a four-credit class affects your GPA more than a one-credit class. Follow these steps to estimate a semester GPA on the common 4.0 scale.

  1. Enter each course

List the classes you took during the semester. Course names help you keep track, but do not change the result.

  2. Add credits and letter grades

Choose the earned A–F grade and number of graded credit hours. The calculator converts each grade into grade points.

  3. Review semester or cumulative GPA

See the credit-weighted semester GPA. To estimate your cumulative GPA, add your prior GPA and completed graded credits.

Semester GPA formula

GPA = Σ (course credits × grade points) ÷ Σ graded credits

Multiply each course's credit hours by its grade-point value, total those quality points, then divide by all credits counted toward GPA.

Worked example

College GPA example: two classes, different credits

Imagine taking a three-credit biology class and a four-credit English class. Your English grade carries more weight because it is worth more credits.

Biology · 3 credits

A · 4.00 points

3 credits × 4.00 = 12.00 quality points

English · 4 credits

B+ · 3.30 points

4 credits × 3.30 = 13.20 quality points

Semester result

25.20 quality points ÷ 7 credits

3.60 GPA

For cumulative GPA, suppose you already completed 30 graded credits with a 3.20 GPA. Your estimated new cumulative GPA is (30 × 3.20 + 25.20) ÷ 37 = 3.28. The calculator performs this weighted calculation when you fill in both previous-GPA fields.

Pass/fail courses, transfer credits, grade replacement, withdrawals, and A+ policies are handled differently by schools. The University of Illinois Registrar's GPA guide illustrates why official term and overall GPA rules can differ. This calculator estimates GPA; it does not issue an official transcript.

How to use this calculator

GPA Calculator: what to know

Most US colleges use credit-weighted grade points, but some use different grading scales, A+ rules, repeated-course policies, or pass/fail exclusions. Check your school's handbook before relying on an estimate.

Common questions

How is semester GPA calculated?

Multiply each course's credit hours by the grade-point value, add the quality points, and divide by total graded credit hours. A four-credit class has more influence than a three-credit class.

How do I calculate cumulative GPA after this semester?

Enter your earlier cumulative GPA and the graded credits that GPA covers. The calculator adds those earlier quality points to this semester's points and divides by all graded credits.

Does an A+ count as 4.0 or 4.3?

This calculator uses a 4.0 maximum: A+ and A both count as 4.00. Some schools use different plus/minus rules, so check your official grade-point chart.

Do pass/fail classes count toward GPA?

This calculator only includes graded A–F courses. Many schools exclude pass/fail credits from grade-point calculations, but your school's rules determine the official result.

Do credits affect GPA?

Yes. The calculator weights each grade by course credits; an A in a four-credit course contributes more quality points than an A in a one-credit course.

Is this my official GPA?

No. This is an estimate using the displayed 4.0 scale. Your school may handle repeated classes, transfer credit, withdrawals, or rounding differently.
