When PNG is the better choice
WebP is excellent for websites: it is small and supports transparency. But some desktop software, print workflows, and older presentation tools can't open it. PNG is lossless and universally supported, so it is the safe format for logos, icons, screenshots, and cut-out product images you need to edit or place on slides.
Transparency and file size
The alpha channel is copied pixel-for-pixel, including soft, semi-transparent edges, so a logo on a transparent background stays transparent. If the WebP has a solid background, the PNG will too — converting can't remove a background that's part of the image.
PNG output is lossless, which means it is usually larger than the WebP — often several times larger for photos. That's expected: PNG stores every pixel exactly. If you need a small photo rather than a lossless graphic, PNG to JPG or Compress Image is a better fit.
Animated WebP
PNG is a still-image format. If a WebP is animated, the converter tells you and saves the first frame.
