A real multi-resolution icon file
An ICO file contains a directory of image entries rather than a PNG renamed with a different extension. This generator writes six size entries into the ICO and stores each rendered 32-bit BMP/DIB image inside the container.
The artwork is scaled to fit each square. Any unused area stays transparent, so a rectangular logo is not distorted to fill the icon.
Favicon use and limits
Add the downloaded favicon.ico to a website's public root or select it in an application that accepts ICO icons. All six entries use 32-bit BMP/DIB image data with an alpha channel and transparency mask.
This tool takes one PNG at a time, supports images within the browser's 100-megapixel limit, and creates the file locally. It does not convert SVG or animated image sources.
