What score do you need on the final?
Enter your current average for completed work, the final exam’s share of the course grade, and your target. This estimate assumes the listed exam is the only remaining graded work.
Formula: required final score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final exam weight)) ÷ final exam weight. The displayed score is rounded up to the next tenth. Inputs stay in this browser; consent-gated analytics record only whether the target is secured, reachable, or unreachable.
How to use this resource
- Check your syllabus or course site for the final exam's weight and the grade calculation method.
- Enter your current grade, final exam weight, and target course grade as percentages from 0 to 100.
- Select Calculate required score to view the estimate. Your numbers stay in this browser and are not sent to ZuffSuite; calculate again after changing an input.
- Compare the estimate with your syllabus if your course uses category weighting, dropped scores, extra credit, a curve, or other remaining work.
How the final grade formula works
Final course grade = current grade × (1 - final exam weight) + final exam score × final exam weight. The current grade is treated as the average on completed work, and the final exam weight is its share of the overall course grade. The calculator converts percentages such as 30% to 0.30 for the calculation.
How to read the result
If the target is at or below the course grade you would have with a zero on the final, the target is already secured under these assumptions. If the target is above the course grade possible with a 100% final score, it cannot be reached under this formula. Otherwise, the calculator rounds the minimum score up to the next tenth of a point so the displayed target does not round below the calculated requirement.
Check your course rules
This estimate assumes one remaining final exam with a known share of the total grade and a current percentage for completed work. It does not model a grading curve, category changes, extra credit, dropped assignments, separate lab grades, or instructor rounding rules. Use the weights in your syllabus and ask your instructor about anything unclear.
Worked example
A practical example
A student has an 82% current grade. The final exam counts for 30% of the course grade, and the student wants an 85% overall. The required score is (85 - 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 92%. Under the stated assumptions, the student needs at least 92% on the final.
Common questions
What does the current course grade mean?
Use the percentage for work completed so far, before the final exam. Check how your gradebook treats ungraded assignments; some systems do not calculate a current average the same way.
What if the required exam score is over 100%?
The calculator explains the highest course grade possible with a 100% final score, so you can see when a target is outside the stated grading assumptions.
What if the target is already secured?
If a zero on the final would still leave your course grade at or above the target, the calculator says the target is secured, assuming the current grade and weights are correct.
Does the calculator save my grades?
No. Your inputs stay in the current page. Analytics record only that the calculator was used, when consent allows; they do not include your grades or target.
